Hi folks. I hope that everyone is doing well. I'm working on many compositions at the moment, but I wanted to ask for a little help. I draw mainly with ballpoint pens and have not used graphite pencils in many years. I am looking for quality HB, B, 2B, 3B, and 6B pencils. Can anyone recommend a high quality brand of graphite pencil to me? The reason I ask is because I would like to start using pencils again for sketching/drawing portraits. I have gotten input from a couple of other artists, but would like to get some more input. Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated by me.

Lol, you're welcome. ;P I find them perfect for tiny details, as you can get the 0.5 and make them needle points.

The 3 main brands I use are Faber Castel, Staedler and Derwent...

Thank you very much Rebecca:hug::). I recently picked up Faber Castel and Staedtler pencils. I plan on picking up Derwents at some point.

Oh and for colour pencils, the Prismacolour are great and the Faber Castell Polychromos line are quite good too

Normally I use Prismacolor graphite pencils, theyre good, but now I prefer mechanical pencils,5B,7B and then a 9B art pencil for extra darks, the 5B is extra nice for sharp clean details. If you decide on art pencils, sharpen them with a razor or knife, and pencil sharpener chews them up.

Thank you very much for your advice. I was curious as to what mechanical pencils you use. Also, do you use any H pencils or is it strictly B pencils? My current sharpener eats up the lead of my pencils at will so I definitely have to try something different.

Youre welcome. For me a knife is the best was to go,easily keeps a sharp point and pencils last longer, another reason I like the mechanical pencils, no sharpening!!! And I told you wrong, my 5B is an HB pencil, the rest are B's, the HB is perfect for shading also, the last 3, I drew were mostly done using this one. For the details you like to make, this would be a good try for you:)
